Introducing Our New Exmoor Sock Line-Up

Yes, you read that correctly! We have some brand new shades to add to our Exmoor Sock palette and we thought you’d like to get to know them…
Our Exmoor Sock 4ply is a trusty favourite around these parts. Not only is it a workhorse yarn, perfect for creating your favourite, cosy socks to last you years, but it’s also dreamy for any 4ply project you can think of, with fab stitch definition and character. This season we’ve decided to give it some much-deserved love, and added four brand new shades to the colour palette. We are smitten with the way these new shades complement the existing line-up, and we hope you’ll think so too!
Get to know our new shades
We’d officially like to introduce Pollywiggle (tadpole) – our oh-so-useful charcoal, Heedy Peep (hide & seek) – our beautiful, mid-toned purple, Hurdy (reddish) – a delicious burgundy, and Oolypuggers (bulrushes) – a brilliant bright green.

These shades have been much requested, and we were only too happy to oblige! This week we’ve had tremendous fun pairing them with other shades of our Exmoor Sock and so we thought we’d show you a couple of inspiring options.
If you’re into jewel tones, then pair your new ‘Oolypuggers’ (our vivid green) with a bit of ‘Bell Heather’, ‘Dimity’, ‘Hemel’ and ‘Drizzle’ for a rich palette of complimentary shades.

After something cooler? Then take a look at ‘Hurdy’ (our new burgundy) against a backdrop of ‘Bibble Bug’, ‘Whortleberries’, or ‘Mizzle’ for a very classy combo.

If you love a bright, punchy palette, then add some ‘Oddmedod’, ‘Mackerel Sky’ and ‘Mizzle’ to your ‘Pollywiggle’ (charcoal) or ‘Heedy Peep’ (lilac) We love how striking the colour pops look against a graphic black and white effect.

How do we name our Exmoor Sock Shades?
If you’ve come across our Exmoor Sock before, you’ll know that when it comes to naming our shades, we turn to the traditional local dialect of days gone by. We’ve carried on the tradition this winter with our four newcomers.
However, ‘Oolypuggers’, ‘Pollywiggle’, ‘Heedy Peep’, and ‘Hurdy’ weren’t the only names we had in mind…
We’re a democratic lot here at the Mill, so we had a very organised voting system to decide what to call each shade.
‘Oolypuggers’, which means ‘Bulrushes’, could also have been ‘Trefoy’, ‘Snap-jacks’, or ‘Hibbet’. But we think ‘Oolypuggers’ suits this bright and vibrant green down to the ground.
‘Heedy Peep’, a local term for Hide and Seek could also have been ‘Dashels’ or ‘Popples’, but ‘Heedy Peep’ won the vote in the end, and it’s just as sweet sounding as its lovely heathered lilac shade.
‘Hurdy’ had ‘Ruckle’, ‘Mazzard’ and ‘Ruddock’ as back-ups. As ‘Hurdy’ means ‘Reddish’ it is certainly the best name for this rich, burgundy wonder.
‘Pollywiggle’, meaning ‘Tadpole’, was almost ‘Flittermouse’, ‘Brock’ or ‘Biddle’, but ‘Pollywiggle’ gave us all a good giggle, so we just couldn’t resist!
Maybe you might see these names adorning future shades…

Exmoor Sock 4ply Composition
Exmoor Sock is rather special to us here at our Devon-based Mill because it truly does celebrate our landscape and the natural wonders that surround us here. We started with our local Exmoor Blueface sheep – a cross breed of the Exmoor Horn (full bodied and hard-wearing) and then added a touch of Bluefaced Leicester (renowned for its softness and lustre). We then chose to add in some naturally dark browny-black Devon Zwartbles, giving extra bounce and a subtle fleck of colour, plus a smattering of Falklands Corriedale to enhance softness and stitch definition. Lastly, you’ll find a hint of Nylon for durability. What more could you ask for?!
Exmoor Sock is available in handy 50g skeins. Perfect for colourwork, stripes or contrasting heels toes and cuffs!
We hope you love our new shades as much as we do. Be sure to check them out, and take a gander at our new sock kits too!
