Introducing ‘Vaeld’, our collaboration with Nervus Fibre

You heard right, folks! We are thrilled to say that we have collaborated with the fabulous Charlotte, of Nervus Fibre once more, to create something extra special for you folks on our fantastic Exmoor Sock 4ply base! Introducing, Vaeld…

‘Vaeld’ is currently available for Mill Members, only.

In 2023 we worked with the lovely Charlotte on a beautiful shade on our Harvest Hues base. You folks loved it so much that we absolutely had to invite her back to collaborate with us again! Charlotte is a very talented dyer whose subtle and complex colourways always get our hearts racing. We were delighted that she fancied teaming up with us again and has created ‘Vaeld’, a variegated beauty of a colourway that we have fallen in love with.

This shade is one of those rare beauties that looks a little different every time you look at it. The delicious blend of browns and neutral tones are enhanced by burnt reds and oranges, with rusty shadows. Pops of green and teal fleck these skeins and when the yarn is knitted up, all these tones blend together wonderfully, creating a very wearable but immensely interesting shade.

What does ‘Vaeld’ mean?

If you are familiar with our Exmoor Sock 4ply yarn, you might know that we always turn to the traditional local dialect of days gone by. Some of our favourites are Oddmedod (snail), Dimity (dusk), Quick Beam (rowan tree berries) and Bibble Bug (woodlouse). We like to give you a giggle!

‘Vaeld’ means ‘field’ in our old Devon dialect, and we think it suits this spectacular shade down to the ground, (pardon the pun!)

The mix of neutrals and browns, with deep and bright greens reminds us of the pastures and fields that surround us here in North Devon. We can’t wait to see these skeins knit and crocheted up into beautiful makes.

Our Exmoor Sock Base

‘Vaeld’ perfectly compliments our Exmoor Sock. This time Charlotte used our darker undyed base, ‘Drizzle’ which gives the skeins a deeper and more complex tone. Dreamy!

Our Exmoor Sock yarn utilises the durable character and bounce of the fibre from our local Exmoor Blueface sheep – a cross breed of the Exmoor Horn (full bodied and hard-wearing) and the Bluefaced Leicester (renowned for its softness and lustre). We’ve added naturally dark browny-black Devon Zwartbles giving extra bounce and a subtle fleck of colour, plus Falklands Corriedale to enhance softness and stitch definition and a hint of Nylon for durability.

Exmoor Sock is aptly named, as it makes for wonderfully durable and stunning socks, but works spectacularly well in any 4ply garment or accessory pattern, giving beautiful stitch definition and bounce.

Composition 60% Exmoor Blueface / 20% Corriedale / 10% Zwartbles / 10% Nylon
Meterage 400 meters per 100 grams (3/12nm)

Charlotte at Nervus Fibre

Charlotte is a pleasure to work with and we are such fans of her work. This is how she describes her dye practice…

Nervus Fibre was born of my love of creating. As a very anxious person, I always struggled to connect and talk about the things I love, but colour is something I have found everyone can enjoy, and I find so much inspiration in peoples individual styles and palettes.

I’ve been a knitter for a long time, and I loved the idea of being able to not only make my own garments, but bring them to life in the colours and fibres that I love. I take a lot of inspiration from the natural world, and also the landscapes and characters in the books I read, if you are a fantasy reader, you may spot some names you recognise in my colourways!

Knitting and crafting isn’t just an enjoyable past time for me, it allows me to settle my endlessly busy brain, and give my fidgety fingers something to occupy their wanderings. I love soft, quiet colourways and beautifully tactile yarns, whether it is the sheepy feel of Devonia, or the tweedy flecks of Donegal, I would knit them all together if I could!

I like to think my yarns are a reflection of myself, so if you like quiet, introverted colours, and fibres that are a bit fuzzy around the edges.. you are in the right place.’

The Roger Socks

Donna, one of our lovely Mill Folk, was rather enamoured by these lovely skeins of Vaeld, so just had to start knitting with it! She chose to make The Roger Socks, by Anne Hanson (RavelryLovecrafts) and we think they perfectly complement each other.

The Roger Socks use a rib and garter texture over the leg and top of the foot, creating an easy-to-memorise, but stunningly effective, stitch motif. We love

We hope you love ‘Vaeld’ as much as we do. What would you like to make with a skein or two?
