Explore the World of Beaded Knitting with Jeanette Sloan
7th July 2024, 12.30pm – 1.30pm (BST / GMT+1)
If you know Jeanette Sloan, you’ll already be familiar with her fabulous patterns, her eye for unique detail and her love of embellishment. So who better to introduce us to the art of beading than the expert herself? In this virtual session we’ll take a look at how beads can add both glamour and detail to a knitted project.
Jeanette will start by exploring two styles of beaded knittng, the types of bead to use, and how to choose the correct size bead for your yarn. She’ll then show us how to attach them onto our yarn and actually work them into our knitting. Jeanette will truly be getting our creative juices flowing, showing us lots of ways to use this splendid technique into our next projects, as well as highlighting her beautiful ‘Hidden Star Mitts’ pattern which she made using our very own Exmoor Sock yarn, along with some exquisite beading.
This event will be hosted on Zoom. It is one of many being planned for our Virtual Mill Open Weekend celebrations. Please follow this link to see all that we are planning for this year’s Virtual MOW.
Skill Level Information:
Advanced beginner. Students should know how to knit, purl and slip stitches with confidence. Basic knowledge of how to read a chart would be useful, as Jeanette will be referring to charts when threading on beads for this technique.
What Should I Bring?
If you fancy trying this technique during the workshop, the following would be useful to have to hand:
- A small amount of DK yarn – a ball from your stash is ideal
- Size 6 beads in a contrasting colour
- Sewing needle with an eye small enough to pass through the bead
- Small amount of sewing thread
- Small scissors and pencil.
Tutor Bio:
Jeanette Sloan is a British hand-knit designer, writer, tutor, and maker who describes herself as an ‘accessories obsessive’. Her contemporary designs are renowned for reflecting her personal style and are an extension of her joyful colour aesthetic. She has a deep love of embellishment and her eye for unusual detail inspires her to develop techniques that knitters of all levels will enjoy making. Her latest mitt design, ‘Hidden Star’, was published in Laine’s 52 Weeks of Accessories. It combines John Arbon Textiles Exmoor Sock 4ply with what Jeanette describes as a ‘colour work approach’ to beaded knitting, which puts an innovative new spin on the technique.
