‘Fallen Leaf’ by Marina Skua – Appledore Tops Special

£6.50 per 100g lot

Introducing, ‘Fallen Leaf’ a limited-edition shade of our Appledore blend, created in collaboration with our chum, Marina Skua. A beautiful mix of local Devon wool in a joyfully autumnal shade.

Marina has an impeccable eye for colour, so we were thrilled to work with her on this special shade. Marina’s inspiration when blending this shade was a perfect tiny leaf that followed her into the mill on the winter’s day when she visited us, and her love of Beech trees – her corresponding pattern is called ‘Beechmast’ in honour of these stunning and colourful trees. We have ‘Beechmast’ kits, here.

All the fibre in our Appledore range is sourced from right here in the West Country, and like all our yarns, Appledore is steeped in our fibre heritage. We have blended together Devon Closewool, a moorland breed with rustic and grippy fibre, with lustrous and characterful Romney and our old favourite, the gloriously bouncy Exmoor Blueface. The resulting blend is packed full of woolly bounce and a smattering of lustre.

‘Fallen Leaf’ is also available as Aran weight yarn, here.

Yarn spun from this fibre will have a wonderfully warm woolly halo and a full-bodied texture. With Appledore we have created a durable workhorse blend which is pill resistant and ideally suited for everyday wear – be that in garments or accessories. For spinners this composition also has the added bonus of increased grip and texture from the more rustic breeds, making it one of our grippiest bases. It is a perfect tops blend to try, if you’re still gaining in confidence and refining your craft.

Marina Skua

Marina is a yarn dyer and hand-knit designer based in a small village in Wiltshire in the South-West of England. She started dyeing yarn as a hobby in 2015 and was immediately obsessed. She now creates beautiful hand-dyed yarns and knitwear designs that fit smoothly into a wardrobe; garments and accessories that can be worn in daily life – not just when we want to sling on a hand-knit to show off at a yarn show. We love her aesthetic and attention to detail, as well as her passion for sustainability.
